The Celtic Wisdom Sticks are 21 short lengths of three-sided wood. Twenty of the sticks are marked with carved grooves and inscribed with a name and letter from the ogam alphabet. Ogam dates from around the fourth century CE. It was used by the filid or Celtic oracular poets to remember their traditional lore. Four oracular meanings are associated with each stick. The correct one is determined by rolling an extra indicator stick marked with the four directions. This set also includes a Hessian bag for storing the sticks (see right). In the accompanying book Celtic Wisdom Sticks: An Ogam Oracle, Caitlin Matthews describes how to read the sticks individually or in different patterns. A sample reading using the "Crossed Hazel" layout is shown below.
